Mistral Large 4 enters public preview: 1T parameters, open weights by month’s end
Mistral’s biggest model yet is natively multimodal with 1T total and 49B active parameters, trained from scratch on 3,800 Grace Blackwell GPUs in its own European datacenters. The preview API is live on Mistral Studio; weights are promised by the end of October after red-teaming with cyber partners and state authorities. The top HN story at ~1,670 points.

OpenAI publishes 722 AI-written math manuscripts, including a claimed Unique Games proof
An unreleased internal model produced 372 result families across 17 fields, released on GitHub under Apache 2.0, with Lean formalizations for the main result of 162 papers. Headline claims (UGC, a quasi-Riemann result, Hodge for CM abelian varieties, free group factors) are still unverified by outside mathematicians, and HN commenters note Lean checks the formal statement, not that it matches the paper. ~670 points, 600+ comments.

EmbeddingGemma 2: a 740M on-device embedding model for text, code, images, audio and video
Google’s follow-up maps all those modalities into one embedding space, is built on the Gemma 4 architecture, and ships under Apache 2.0. Useful for private, local RAG and media search without a cloud embedding API. ~276 points on HN.

Decision models go mainstream: OpenAI Decisions API beta and AWS’s open Strands Decider 2B
These “system one” models only pick from fixed options, but are faster, always return a valid answer, and give a calibrated confidence score, which suits routing and guard checks in agent workflows. OpenAI’s /v1/decisions endpoint (gpt-6-luna only, GA expected in weeks) and the open 2B Strands model both follow TypeSafe AI’s Jev launch earlier this month.

South Korea says AI agents appear to have been used to hack its banks
President Lee said AI appears to have been used in a string of bank intrusions; Tom’s Hardware reports data on about 25,000 customers was exposed, and the WSJ says a Chinese AI tool was involved. HN skeptics want evidence of how investigators attributed it to agents, but it’s another sign that low-skill, agent-assisted attacks are reaching real targets.

Armin Ronacher on why Pi 1.0 added MCP through “Codemode”
The bash-first argument still holds because models compose shell calls well, but some tools (image reading, for example) must be native to the harness. Codemode lets the agent call MCP tools from code it writes, instead of loading every tool definition into context. A good read if you’re designing an agent harness.

Agentability: a public log of an AI agent doing ten web errands a day
Each day an agent tries ten real errands using plain HTTP only (no JavaScript, no logins), and every transcript is published. It also scores 113 popular sites on agent-readiness checks like llms.txt, crawler policy, structured data and MCP. This week it finished 8 of 10 and hit 10 bot walls.

cgroup v1 is on its way out: kubelet refuses v1 nodes by default since 1.35
The Kubernetes blog spells out the timeline: failCgroupV1 defaults to true, 1.36 still allows a failCgroupV1: false override, and the fallback is slated for removal in v1.38 (KEP-5573). Audit your node images and the containerd compatibility matrix before your next upgrade.

OpenTelemetry’s Kubernetes Attributes Processor hits v1.0, with renamed attributes
The Collector component that stamps pod, namespace, node and workload metadata onto logs, metrics and traces is now stable. It adopts the stable K8s semantic conventions, so plural keys like k8s.pod.labels become k8s.pod.label; check your dashboards and queries before upgrading.

NVIDIA AI Cluster Runtime (AICR) 1.0: validated recipes for GPU Kubernetes clusters
AICR pins compatible component versions for GPU clusters and can snapshot, render (Helm, Argo CD, Flux, Helmfile) and validate a live cluster against a recipe with signed evidence. The 1.0 release freezes the CLI, REST API, Go SDK and artifact schemas.

SREGym: a decision model diagnosed 76% of injected cluster faults with no LLM agent
A pipeline collects cluster evidence programmatically and has the Jev decision model pick the root cause. It passed 80 of 105 diagnoses across 21 fault types, with a median of 14.6 seconds; the post includes failed traces and cost comparisons.

Counterfeit TLS certificates issued for Google domains after ccTLD registry hijacks
Attackers compromised the .gh, .sl and .as registries, changed DNS for selected domains and passed automated domain validation to get certs for several Google domains and other big services. Chrome blocked what it found, but Google tells domain owners to watch Certificate Transparency logs themselves.

OpenSSH 10.6 will ship more often because AI is finding bugs
The team says AI-found bugs are often rediscovered independently, so attackers can likely find them too; fixes will now go out faster instead of being batched. The release also starts deprecating scp -R and tightens checks on command-line usernames.

Polars 2.0 makes SQL a first-class citizen
