Reflection unveils Beam, a 501B open-weight MoE (23B active)

Reflection’s first open model targets coding and agentic work: pretrained on 23.8T tokens, then RL’d with 100M+ rollouts on 10.5K GB300s. It reports 80.9 on SWE-bench Verified and 80.1 on Terminal Bench v2.1, competitive with GLM 5.2 but behind Kimi K3, and pitches inference efficiency. Weights are promised under Apache 2.0 later this month; for now it’s waitlist-only. ~384 points on HN.

Amazon Nova 2.5 Sonic is GA for real-time voice agents

AWS’s new speech-to-speech model improves reasoning, instruction following and tool-calling accuracy with lower latency, keeps a 256K context and async tool calls, and costs the same as Nova 2 Sonic. Strands Bidi Agents, the SDK for building voice agents on it, is also GA. Available in Bedrock in us-east-1, us-west-2, Stockholm and Tokyo.

Dust: pretraining transformers without backpropagation

Q Labs presents a zeroth-order method that perturbs activations per token, so one forward pass evaluates a whole “population”. They claim it tracks or beats backprop at large population sizes and is 10³–10⁴× more efficient than weight-space evolution strategies, tested up to 1B tokens. Research-stage, but an interesting challenge to backprop-only training. ~144 points on HN.

Claude Opus 5.5 agent team proposes two room-temperature magnetic semiconductor candidates

Vals AI says a team of Opus 5.5 agents helped design one new compound and resurface a 1999 material that calculations predict are antiferromagnetic yet still sort electrons by spin, which is useful for future memory tech. They published the full calculations, code and a caveat list; these are predictions, not lab results yet. ~275 points on HN.

Cloudflare launches a Web Search API for agents (beta)

Agents can now search the live web through AI Gateway, choosing Ceramic.ai, Exa or Linkup as the provider. All three support zero data retention, calls show up in gateway logs, and you pay provider list price with no markup, or bring your own key. Callable via REST or the Workers env.AI.websearch binding. ~517 points on HN.

Claude Code adds cloud-session orchestration and a PR review beta

For some Pro and Max users, Claude Code cloud sessions can now scope, delegate and keep work running while your device is offline, with addressable threads per session and shared memory. Separately, Claude Code Review is in beta for Teams and Enterprise; Anthropic says useful PR feedback rose from 16% to 54% of PRs, at a reported $15–25 per review.

Hugging Face OpenEnv turns real coding harnesses into RL environments

A capture proxy records the exact tokens that harnesses like Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and Pi produce, so TRL’s async GRPO can train on them without rebuilding the agent loop. Reportedly, training on one harness didn’t transfer well, but training across four lifted the average solve rate from 42% to 54%, and a small reward for using fewer tools cut tool calls by about 31%.

JetBrains Air arrives in IDEs (EAP)

Air, JetBrains’ multi-agent workspace, now runs inside its IDEs as a plugin or in 2026.3 EAP builds. It supports Codex, Gemini, Copilot, Claude Agent and Junie out of the box, plus any ACP agent, and offers free Junie Lite runs. Installing it disables AI Assistant, though that plugin stays supported.

Anthropic flagged a user’s Claude “diary” threat to police

A Florida woman faces a felony written-threat charge after an entry saying she’d “shoot up” a sheriff’s office was flagged by Claude’s safety systems, checked by a human reviewer and passed to police. It’s a sharp reminder that chat and agent logs can be reviewed and disclosed in emergencies. ~645 points and 500+ comments on HN.

Kubernetes

Node swap on NVMe gives up to 3× pod density for agent-style workloads

A new Kubernetes blog benchmark (swap has been GA since v1.34) tested CI kernel builds, sandboxed headless browsers and isolated Python runtimes. With Local SSD swap, one node went from failing at a hard RAM limit to running 240 concurrent Python sandboxes. Latency rose at peak density mostly from CPU contention, not swap itself.

The swap caveat: a 40ms Go GC pause from swapped-out runtime metadata

The flip side, also trending on HN: Go’s GC reads its own bookkeeping during stop-the-world pauses, and if those pages have been swapped out, a ~51µs median pause can spike to 40ms. In the author’s eBPF trace, 39 of those 40ms were 228 page faults. Keep latency-sensitive Go services off swap-heavy nodes, or protect their memory.

Kubelet has no early warning for inode exhaustion

Image GC kicks in on bytes at 85% usage, but for inodes the only trigger is the hard eviction floor at 95%, so the first thing that happens is pods getting evicted. The CNCF post recommends a flat inode alert well before that point, alongside the predictive NodeFilesystemFilesFillingUp alert.

Defense-in-depth reference architecture for AI agents operating clusters

A new arXiv paper argues that LLM agents reading telemetry and changing production Kubernetes state erase the usual line between data and control. It proposes a layered framework and reference architecture for containing these “autonomous operators”. Useful reading if you’re giving agents cluster credentials.

Sandboxes

Cloudflare Sandbox SDK 1.0: Durable Objects drive agent containers

Shipped Sep 30: your own Durable Object classes now control sandbox containers directly through this.ctx.container, choosing image and instance size at runtime instead of at deploy time. Filesystem snapshots save and restore workspaces in fractions of a second. This makes it more practical to run per-agent code interpreters at the edge.

LithosBox: millisecond snapshot, fork and restore for agent sandboxes

LithosAI opened a public preview of versioned sandboxes with Git-like state control, so an agent can fork thousands of environments, explore several paths, and keep only the winner. They also claim 727 tok/s on GLM 5.3 Flash and argue that end-to-end agent-loop latency, not raw token speed, is the real bottleneck. These are vendor claims announced on X.

Refresher: Linux containers in 500 lines of code

A 2016 classic is back on HN: a minimal container runtime built from namespaces, capabilities, seccomp and cgroups. It’s a quick way to see exactly which isolation primitives container-based agent sandboxes rely on, and where microVMs or gVisor add a stronger boundary.

Denmark’s population registry breach exposes ~8.8M people

Attackers abused a Danish company’s legitimate CPR lookup access to pull names, addresses and CPR numbers for about 8.8 million registered people over roughly ten days; people with address protection were excluded. Access is blocked and police are investigating. It’s a textbook case for rate limits and anomaly detection on partner API access. ~473 points on HN.

mold 3.0 ships, rewritten from C++ to Rust

The fast linker’s first Rust release is meant as a drop-in replacement for 2.42.1: same options, targets and output, with linking speed on par. It was validated by building all of Gentoo. Corrupt input now panics on a bounds check instead of segfaulting, and builds move from CMake to Cargo (Rust 1.95+).

GitHub Actions degraded for ~3.5 hours last night

GitHub reported degraded Actions performance from 22:11 to 01:49 (Bucharest), followed by a broader service disruption from 02:47 to 04:32; both are resolved, with root-cause analysis to come. If overnight pipelines or scheduled workflows failed, re-run them.
