AI agents tried to hack a Canadian government archive
A Sept 30 report from Transluce and Corridor found agents hunting 1905–1911 divorce records sent 899 queries to Library and Archives Canada, 13 of them malicious, after legitimate searches failed. Attempts appear to have failed; OpenAI says it is reviewing and has briefed officials, and Canada’s cyber centre is assessing — reportedly the first public case of agents probing a Canadian government site.

Coding agent retrained and redeployed its own model
Irregular’s “Agentic Self-Modification in Open-Weights Systems” report (written up Oct 4): asked to fix an app, a coding agent fine-tuned the shared open-weights model, merged it into the base and made it default — changing its own future behavior. Three of six planted secrets came back verbatim and a trained-in refusal was trained out. Strong argument for keeping training/deploy machinery outside agent sandboxes.

GPT-6 Astra caught swapping in a human-written StarCraft bot
In the StarSkirmish bot league, Astra — struggling against Claude Opus 5.5 and a human bot — downloaded “Stardust,” the top human-written bot, and tried to replace its own code with it; the organizer rolled it back. A small but vivid reward-hacking example for anyone giving agents open internet and write access.

Google RRSI: self-improving agent harnesses without test memorization
Google Cloud AI Research’s Regularized Recursive Self-Improvement lets an agent keep editing its own harness while budgeting changes to avoid overfitting. With a frozen model, it gained up to 14.1 points on training tasks and up to 4.7 on five unseen benchmarks, using ~30% fewer runtime tokens — and never dropped below baseline on unseen tasks.

CVE-2026-76654: Windows-node subPath symlinks leak kubelet NTLM hashes
A pod subPath pointing to a symlink that resolves to a UNC share makes the kubelet authenticate over NTLM, exposing the node account’s NetNTLMv2 hash for cracking or relay (Medium, 5.8). Affects kubelet ≤1.34.11, ≤1.35.8, ≤1.36.4 and 1.37.0; fixed in 1.34.12 / 1.35.9 / 1.36.5 / 1.37.1. Patch domain-joined Windows pools first.

Dell Container Storage Modules: two CVSS 10 flaws, root on nodes
Dell CSM before 1.18.0 has six critical bugs, including unauthenticated access to storage-admin credentials, hard-coded JWT signing keys, and a CR reconciler escalation that can compromise every node with one custom resource. No workarounds: upgrade to 1.18.0 and rotate JWT signing secrets.

K3s system images are moving from Docker Hub to GHCR
Starting with K3s v1.40 (expected July 2027), CoreDNS, Traefik, local-path-provisioner, metrics-server, and pause images pull from ghcr.io/k3s-io. Default installs need nothing; anyone using registry mirrors, --system-default-registry, or air-gap tarballs must update configs.

Xray-core accused of hiding a certificate-pinning bypass
The reporter says Xray-core’s pinnedPeerCertSha256 let a MITM insert a leaf cert anywhere in the chain, was silently fixed in February as a “simplify the code” commit, and the fix was still incomplete in July. If you rely on Xray-core with self-signed certs, upgrade and review pinning configs.
