OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol — near-Astra at one-fifth the price

DevDay (Sep 29): OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol nearly matches GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use, and professional work at 1/5 Astra’s standard I/O prices ($2 / $10 per M tokens; cached input $0.10). Gains vs GPT-6 Sol on DeepSWE, AutomationBench, OSWorld, and Terminal-Bench Science; factual-error rate at low effort drops from 11.4% to 7.7%. Available now in ChatGPT Work and Codex (Plus+); API id gpt-6.1-sol. GPT-6.1 Astra was not shipped—press reports cite internal safety concerns around deception and over-autonomy.

Claude Sonnet 5.5 still the mid-tier coding default (day 2)

Anthropic’s Sep 28 drop remains the practical alternative overnight: 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 vs Sonnet 5’s 10.3%, 30%+ faster, same $2/$10 list price but typically ~30% less cost per task, first Sonnet with Opus-class cyber safeguards. Model id claude-sonnet-5-5 on Claude Platform, AWS, GCP, Azure. Worth re-checking if you haven’t migrated everyday agent loops yet.

Agents

OpenAI Dots: always-on agents with their own cloud computer

Also DevDay: Dots are GPT-6 Astra–powered personal agents that run 24/7 on a dedicated cloud computer, connect to 4,000+ apps via plugins, and work across ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams. Proactive research uses read-only tools when idle; Custom Rules + auto-review gate consequential actions. Rolling out to Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets (Enterprise via admin); first Dot included in plan. HN front page overnight (~522 points).

Kubernetes v1.38 Enhancements Freeze is today

Per Last Week in Kubernetes Development, the v1.38 Enhancements Freeze lands Sep 29 AoE / Sep 30 12:00 UTC. Final release targeted Dec 16, 2026. If a KEP isn’t tracked by SIG leads with Production Readiness Review done (or an exception), it’s out of this cycle—last call for platform teams with alpha bets for 1.38.

1.37 Workload-Aware Scheduling still the upgrade story

While 1.38 freezes, operators still evaluating 1.37 “Garhwal”: Workload / PodGroup APIs, Workload-Aware Preemption, and shared DRA ResourceClaims for PodGroups graduated to Beta; new CompositePodGroup API for multi-level topology / gang scheduling (JobSet, LeaderWorkerSet). Pair with Metrics API GA and rootless kubelet Beta from the main 1.37 release notes.

Sandboxes

Docker Cloud Sandboxes: laptop ↔ cloud microVMs with sbx move

Still the clearest product move for long-horizon coding agents (Sep 24): same microVM isolation model locally or on Docker-managed compute; sbx move … --to cloud migrates the filesystem either way. Kits for Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, and others; MCP gateway; secret proxy so agents never hold raw keys. Pay-as-you-go from ~$0.07/hr (Micro); sessions up to 24 hours.

kubernetes-sigs/agent-sandbox + gVisor RuntimeClass pattern

SIG docs keep pushing declarative Sandbox CRs with runtimeClassName: gvisor so agent code execution hits runsc’s userspace kernel instead of the host. Practical for platform teams who want cluster-native agent isolation (KIND overlay + Sandbox Router) rather than a hosted sandbox SaaS.

Backblaze Drive Stats Q2 2026: quarterly AFR at 1.73%

Sep 29 report covers 354k+ data drives: quarterly AFR 1.73% (highest in a while), lifetime AFR ~1.41%. 20TB+ drives now >25% of the fleet; deep dive on CMR vs SMR density tradeoffs (no SMR in fleet yet). Useful reference if you’re planning storage densification or rebuild risk models.

Show HN: NSL — WSL-style Linux machines for Linux

Frostyard’s pre-release nsl (v0.4.0) runs persistent distro machines as systemd-nspawn containers inside a shared VM—WSL-like workflow on a Linux host. Seven signed images (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.); --isolated spins a separate VM without host file access. Aimed at atomic hosts that shouldn’t accumulate toolchain junk.
