AI models

Anthropic ships Claude Sonnet 5.5 (HN #1 overnight)

Second model in the Claude 5.5 family: Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 runs 30%+ faster than Sonnet 5, typically costs up to 30% less per task (same list price: $2 / $10 per M input/output), and jumps to 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 vs Sonnet 5’s 10.3%. Positioned as the everyday / coding complement to Opus 5.5; first Sonnet to launch with Opus-class cyber safeguards. Available now as claude-sonnet-5-5 on the Claude Platform, AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure.

Jeff: tiny Jev-compatible decision models (~0.8B, ~30 ms)

Open-source fine-tunes of Qwen3.5 and Gemma 4 aimed at zero-shot classification / decision routing for agent pipelines. HN highlight: home-trainable, sub-second latency, Jev-compatible — useful as a cheap router ahead of frontier models rather than a replacement for them.

Pac-Bench: one-shot Pac-Man HTML bake-off

Show HN benchmark that asks harness+model stacks to create a Pac-Man game in a single HTML page from one prompt, no follow-ups. Handy sanity check for “can this stack ship a playable artifact cold,” not just pass coding unit tests.

Agents

Cloudflare launches cf: agentic CLI for the whole Cloudflare API

Open beta CLI generated from Cloudflare’s OpenAPI schemas via Forge, expanding coverage from Wrangler’s ~280 commands to 3,000+ API operations. Defaults to JSON (agent-friendly), adds cf cli search for natural-language command discovery, TypeScript cloudflare.config.ts, and Vite-first local dev. Install: npm i -g cf; Wrangler stays for an 18-month maintenance window after beta ends.

Show HN: HN.watch — LLM explainer videos for every HN post

Scrimba’s HN.watch generates HTML-based explainer videos on first click (~seconds, ~$0.04/video excluding image gen). Also ships as Scrimba Explain with MCP / ChatGPT plugin / Chrome extension — another signal that agents are being wired into content and docs pipelines, not only coding.

Kubernetes

Kubernetes 1.37 “Garhwal” still the upgrade target — Metrics API GA, rootless kubelet Beta

InfoQ’s Sep 21 wrap-up keeps 1.37 (Aug 26) in focus for operators: Metrics API (metrics.k8s.io) generally available; rootless kubelet / user-namespace mode Beta and on by default; pod certificates Stable for native mTLS; HPA scale-to-zero Beta (cost angle for GPU/AI workloads). Watch removals (feature gates, kubeadm v1beta3, iptables→nftables countdown) before cluster bumps.

KCD Sofia is today; KubeCon NA Nov 9–12 in Salt Lake City

Kubernetes Community Day Sofia lands Sep 29. Next major CNCF gathering is KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America, Nov 9–12 in Salt Lake City — expect more DRA / workload-aware scheduling / agent-on-cluster content after 1.37.

Sandboxes

Nvidia Open Agent Safety Platform — OpenShell + Sentry for agent containment

Announced Sep 28: Nvidia positions the stack as infrastructure-enforced containment (“a browser for agents”) after disclosed sandbox-escape incidents at major labs. OpenShell runs on CPUs to bound agent capabilities; Sentry monitors on network chips. Partial open source / reference design; partners include Cisco, Microsoft, Oracle, CoreWeave, Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Arm, Intel; Nvidia says it’s working with Anthropic on managed-agent integration.

Docker Cloud Sandboxes: same microVM local or cloud, one sbx move

Sep 24 launch extends Docker Sandboxes (microVM isolation for coding agents) to Docker-managed cloud compute. Same CLI and isolation model; sbx move … --to cloud migrates filesystem either way. Kits for Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, and others; MCP gateway; secret proxy so agents never hold raw keys. Pay-as-you-go compute from ~$0.07/hr (Micro) up; sessions up to 24 hours.

World Labs is joining AMD

Spatial / world-model lab founded by Fei-Fei Li signed a definitive agreement to join AMD; Fei-Fei becomes AMD EVP and Chief Scientist reporting to Lisa Su. Justin Johnson and Ben Mildenhall continue leading the team inside AMD. Deal targeted to close by end of 2026, subject to approvals — hardware + open AI ecosystem pitch.

Cal Newport: “It’s Time to Investigate the AI Labs”

Essay arguing for harder external scrutiny of frontier labs’ claims, incentives, and safety practices. Useful framing piece amid the Sonnet 5.5 / agent-safety news cycle, not a product launch.
