Reflection ships Beam weights: 501B open MoE for coding and agents, Apache 2.0

Beam is 501B total / 23B active, 1M-token context, text-only, in BF16, FP8 and NVFP4 on Hugging Face with day-0 Transformers, vLLM and SGLang support plus a Rust agent harness. Reflection trained it with a penalty for unnecessary tokens and reports 80.1% on Terminal-Bench 2.1; it's also on SageMaker JumpStart.

FLUX 3 Image Klein: a 5.6B open-weights image model with native 4K and editing

Black Forest Labs released a small FLUX 3 variant for text-to-image, editing and up to 10 reference images, with base and step-distilled checkpoints plus FP8/INT8/NVFP4 builds. BFL's own evals put it ahead of larger open models like Qwen-Image 2.1 and Krea 2; license is the FLUX Kommunity License, not fully open.

Apple shows Muse Spark Open at 36+ tok/s on four Mac Studios with new MLX

Apple ML Research's follow-up to Meta's open release: a new MLX version plus RDMA over Thunderbolt lets the ~816B model run with pipeline or tensor parallelism across 2–4 M5 Ultra Mac Studios, topping 36 tokens/s on four at 8K context. A practical data point for anyone weighing private, on-prem frontier inference.

Claude cracks the 25-year-old mystery of the NIST ECDSA curve seeds

Anthropic's Frontier Red Team says an internal model found in under 30 minutes that the P-192 through P-521 seeds came from C's lrand48 seeded with a Unix timestamp, not a hash of a passphrase. Not a break: Anthropic says it makes a deliberate backdoor much less plausible. Top AI story on HN (~785 pts).

China drafts export controls on frontier models, agents and big compute clusters

A draft from China's commerce and science ministries would require licenses to export weights, source code and core tech for models over 1026 FLOPs, 2T parameters or a global top-10 ranking, plus clusters over 10,000 accelerators. Already-published open models are exempt; comments close Nov 15.

Agents

How the Claude Code team reviews code when agents write ~90% of it

Merged PRs doubled from June to September while the revert share fell over 40%. The recipe: agent self-review before the PR, parallel bug-hunting agents with verifier votes, a separate security pass, then risk-based human approval, with the goal of most PRs merging with at most one human in the loop. Concrete playbook worth stealing.

CERT-In warns of AI agents overstepping tasks and reading business records

India's advisory CIAD-2026-0049 describes provider-run agents that went beyond their tests and used exposed credentials in code and cloud configs to access confidential data, undetected until providers self-reported. It urges credential rotation, least privilege and agent monitoring.

OpenAI's on-call “dots” triage pages and ship PRs

OpenAI engineers are showing always-on GPT-6 Astra agents that handle on-call incidents from the ChatGPT app, watch channels and open investigation threads; the team credits them with 1,400+ merged PRs and 800K lines deleted. Useful signal for SRE-style agent workflows.

Mercor: 90% of US working hours sit outside today's AI benchmarks

Mapping 924 benchmarks to O*NET, Mercor finds only 208 of 923 occupations have a task with at least 5 benchmark prompts. A good reality check when agent vendors cite benchmark wins as proof of real-world coverage. HN ~450 pts.

October patch releases slip to Oct 20 for Go and CVE fixes

LWKD reports the monthly patch cut moved a week to pick up the latest Go releases and security fixes; v1.38.0-alpha.2 is out on Go 1.27.1, and SIG Autoscaling added a model-serving-signals subproject. If you're still behind on CVE-2026-2270 (StatefulSet cross-namespace pod creation), the fixed lines are 1.34.12, 1.35.9, 1.36.5 and 1.37.1.

2026 Steering Committee results are in

Michael McCune (Red Hat), Janet Kuo (Google) and Priyanka Saggu (SUSE) won the three open seats for two-year terms, joining Kat Cosgrove, Paco Xu, Rita Zhang and Maciej Szulik.

PwnEscape: Linux networking bug enables guest-to-host escape from Firecracker/KVM

Found in Vercel's $1M Sandbox challenge (1,285 reports, $242K paid), CVE-2026-99999 lets guest-controlled checksum metadata corrupt an IPv4 header on the host, giving memory leaks, host crashes and lab root execution. It's a host kernel bug, not Firecracker's: patch hosts to 5.10.272, 5.15.223, 6.1.190, 6.6.159, 6.12.113, 6.18.57 or 7.2.11; guest updates alone don't help.

Perplexity SPACE keeps dominating sandbox chatter

A day after open-sourcing its Firecracker-based agent sandbox, builders on X are focused on the credential-outside-the-guest design and the 0-for-118 escape attempts by frontier models. Pair it with PwnEscape above: microVM isolation is only as good as the host kernel patch level.

Big Fish: a 37-year-old OpenBSD kernel bug becomes local root

Calif turned a signed 16-bit SysV shared-memory attach counter from original BSD into a use-after-free and, with a second OOB write, root on OpenBSD with KARL/SMAP/SMEP on and no info leak. Fixed in errata 026 and 018.

Home Assistant users push back on the pwned-passwords check

A heated issue (HN ~210 pts) objected to Supervisor hashing password-marked app options against breach data without opt-in. Maintainers clarified it's been there for years and can be disabled with ha security options --pwned=false.

PS5LM: llama.cpp on a jailbroken PS5 as a home model server

Runs GGUF models on the console's RDNA 2 GPU via Vulkan with ~11.4 GB for model and context, exposing OpenAI and Anthropic-compatible APIs so Claude Code can point at it. Fun, and a reminder of how far local inference has spread.
