AI models

Gemini 4 Argon is now generally available

Oct 13: Google opened its frontier model to everyone after the Fairwind-only phase, via the paid Gemini API (gemini-4-argon), AI Studio, Antigravity, Gemini for business, and the Gemini app for Pro/Ultra. Introductory pricing is $2 / $10 per M input/output tokens until Nov 30, then $4 / $20, with a 1M unified input-output token limit and a new continuation protocol; the model card reports 57.4% on Terminal-Bench 4.0. Top HN story this morning (~1,150 pts).

Gemini 4 Argon Cyber Permissive: allowlist-only defensive cyber variant

Shipped alongside the GA as gemini-4-argon-cyber-permissive for vulnerability discovery, reverse engineering, exploit verification, and patch generation. Access requires the Fairwind Program or Google approval, it defaults to HIGH thinking, and it has no computer use.

Agents

Anthropic built its own source control (Scion) because agents broke git

Merges to Anthropic’s monorepo went from ~2,500/day in May to 30,000+/day in September, so a seven-person team built Scion, a server-centric, always-online VCS with sparse/virtualized checkouts, plus a code review tool, and fully migrated in five months. They report a 200x smaller infra footprint than their git mirrors, checkouts in seconds, a 25% CI CPU win, and post-merge testing replacing a classic merge queue. HN ~650 pts.

Gemini 4 Argon lands in GitHub Copilot

GA for Copilot Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise across VS Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the coding agent, JetBrains, Xcode, and Eclipse, billed at provider list pricing. GitHub says the biggest gains were in Copilot CLI; admins control it through model policy, and new models are on by default unless disabled.

Kubernetes

Agent Sandbox v1.0.6 (kubernetes-sigs) adds a multi-cluster warm-pool planner

The Kubernetes-native Sandbox CRD gets the first part of a multi-cluster warm-pool fleet planner, commands.start() in the TypeScript SDK, and Go/Python SDK parity. Heads-up: a new CEL rule rejects Sandbox names over 63 characters when spec.service: true, and it also blocks updates to existing objects, and router scoped-token v2 authorization changed. Pairs well with the project’s gVisor RuntimeClass guide.

Lambda will ship open-source NVIDIA Run:ai on its managed Kubernetes

Oct 13: following NVIDIA’s open-sourcing of Run:ai, Lambda plans to make it a first-class managed component of Lambda Kubernetes Service, bringing GPU fractions and fair-share scheduling on top of LKS’s automatic GPU node cordon/drain/remediation. No availability date yet.

October patch releases were due Oct 13 but aren’t tagged yet

The Kubernetes patch calendar targeted Oct 13 (1.37.2 and siblings), but as of this morning GitHub still shows 1.37.1 / 1.36.5 / 1.35.9 / 1.34.12 from Sept 23 as the latest. Worth a check later today if you’re waiting on a fix.

Sandboxes

Factory Environments GA: prebuilt, validated sandbox images for cloud agents

Oct 12: Factory’s Environments (successor to Cloud Templates) prebuild repos, toolchains, and dependencies into portable images that rebuild every few hours, with only validated builds promoted. Each Droid, Automation, or Mission worker gets an independent instance, under admin policies for reachable hosts, allowed or approval-gated shell commands, and connectors.

VS Code 1.141 extends agent sandboxing to Windows, macOS, and Linux

chat.agent.sandbox.enabled limits agent file and network access, sandboxes locally launched MCP and language servers by default, and can be enforced through preview managed settings. The release also lets Copilot CLI and Codex/ChatGPT sessions continue inside VS Code. Microsoft is explicit that this is defense in depth, not a standalone security boundary.

Ledger confirms LTE spy-chip implant in reseller-sold wallets

Ledger says some devices sold through reseller CryptoBilis carried an unauthorized LTE/eSIM implant that read the 24-word recovery phrase off the screen during setup and sent it to attackers; the Secure Element and firmware weren’t altered. The Block reports MediaMarkt suspended sales in Europe. A sharp hardware supply-chain lesson. HN ~575 pts.

Rust borrow checker unsoundness traced back over a decade

Issue #164250: a custom Drop can keep a short-lived reference alive through a covariant field write, giving use-after-scope in safe code; it reproduces on current stable and nightly, with variants reported back to very early Rust. No fix or workaround linked yet. HN ~700 pts.
